In 2002 the WAAC Board established a rules sub-committee to compile and review all the rules the organization had developed and implemented over the years. This list of exhibition rules was approved by the Board at that time. In 2006 & 2010 these rules were again reviewed for clarity and implementation and then last updated in 2017. The Board’s goal with these exhibition rules is to ensure an aesthetically pleasing exhibition space while treating all exhibiting members equally and with respect. Rules Committee members are Bernie Tennis, Susan Baez, and Cynthia Koshalek.
A. ONLY WISCONSIN RESIDENTS, 18 or older are eligible to exhibit in WAAC Art Fairs. Refunds will not be issued to out-of-state applicants. Exhibitors will be asked at the time of check-in at the show to present a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
B. Exhibitors must be current members of The Wisconsin Alliance of Artists and Craftspeople, Inc.
C. Artists must oversee their exhibit at all times and must display their work for the duration of the show. Assistants, including family members, are welcome, but not in place of the artist. It is not permissible to exhibit, simultaneously, at the Art Fair Off the Square and any other Madison art fair.
D. Anyone failing to exhibit on the second day will be required to rejury.
E. Two exhibitors may share a booth, providing the work is compatible. An additional fee of $10.00 per exhibitor will be required. Please submit separate applications and images along with an explanation of your arrangements for sharing. Two exhibitors, producing a single product, need not pay the additional booth fee, but will still need to pay the two-person team membership fees.
F. 5.5% Wisconsin and Dane County Sales Tax. Artists are responsible for the collection, reporting, and payment of all taxes.
G. After being accepted as an exhibitor and paying your booth fee, you are considered to have made a commitment to exhibit. Your fee will not be refunded if you cancel. Accepted artists, who cancel, will be required to rejury next year.
a. Exceptions to rejurying may be considered if you have canceled for reason of illness or emergency. If this is the case, you may appeal to the Board to maintain your status as an Invited Exhibitor. Your request must be in writing, including the reason for cancellation, and submitted to the Board within 6 weeks following the show.
A. Each exhibitor is responsible for supplying and erecting his or her own display. Canopies are not permitted, but the frame is. NO display materials may extend outside the front of the booth spaces into main patron walkway.
B. When back to back or side by side with another exhibitor, no work is to be displayed on the exterior wall (side or rear) of any adjacent booth (s). The sides of your display should not interfere with your neighbor’s display.
C. Standard booth displays must fit within assigned space ( 10’ wide by 10’ deep area). Support materials including (but not limited to) selling stations, racks, shelves, panels, flip-bins, chairs, stools, boxes, canopies, and umbrella poles must be kept within assigned space.
A. All work displayed must be designed and executed by the artist.
B. Artists must submit a set of images for each category in which they wish to exhibit. As an example, artists accepted in a category, other than jewelry, must also jury in jewelry, if they wish to sell it.
C. All work on display must be for sale.
D. Artists must oversee their exhibit at all times and display their work for the duration of the show. Assistants, including family members, are welcome, but not in place of the artist.
E. Artists are required to display an artist’s statement in their booth.
F. Mechanical reproductions may be sold but must be labeled as a “reproduction”. They must be printed on archival quality media and be properly signed and numbered as a limited edition. Browse bin collections of reproductions may be labeled with one general sign rather than individually. Reproductions must be limited to 50% of the display area. The artist should also include a description of their reproduction process in the artist’s statement.
G. Each exhibitor will be screened during the fair to be certain the images submitted for jurying reflect the work being exhibited. In case of a discrepancy, the artist may be asked to remove the work or leave the fair and/or be required to re-jury the following year. Under these conditions, there will be no refund of booth fee. All decisions of the fair committee in such situations are final. Unacceptable work includes, but is not limited to: work produced from commercial molds, templates or patterns (mugs and t-shirts), kits or casting patterns, imports, decoupage, and mass-produced items. Work done by a production studio is not acceptable. Tapes/CDs of instruments, made and played by the artist, may be sold along with the instrument, but not alone.
H. No “SALE” or “REDUCED” or "% OFF" signs are allowed. We recommend exhibitors bring a range of items to accommodate both the gift shopper and the fine art buyer.
PRINT: A process where multiples of an image are created by the hand of the artist. Examples include serigraphy, etchings, woodcuts, digital, and photography. A print is considered an original by this definition.
MECHANICAL REPRODUCTIONS: A process in which multiples of an image are created but the hand of the artist is not directly involved. Examples include offset lithography and giclees.
REMARQUE: A small drawing or sketch added to an original print.
For identification and jury purposes WAAC classifies a Remarque added to a reproduction as a reproduction, not an original.
